How to care for your wooden wick candle.

Burn on a heat-resistant, flat surface. Keep away from drafts, children, pets, fabric or anything flammable. Always burn within sight.

  • The first time you light the candle, allow the melted wax pool to reach the edge of the container. For small candles it may only take an hour. For large candles it can take 2+ hours.
Wooden wicks light slower than cotton wicks. It is comparable to lighting a fireplace. Hold your lighter (we use a barbecue lighter) close to the wick for 20 or more seconds to fully light the wick.
  • Never leave your burning candle unattended.
  • Burn for 4 hours maximum. Continuing to burn the candle beyond 4 hours is a safety hazard and will reduce your candle life.
  • Do not touch the container while the candle is burning, or while it’s still warm.
  • Wooden wicks are generally self-trimming, but if the excess burnt wood is longer than 1/4″, break off the extra burnt wood before you light it.
  • If you have burned the candle a while and the flame is very low, you may need to remove the extra burnt wood at the top of the wick.
  • Burn candles in a well-ventilated non-drafty room. A draft might blow out the candle prematurely or keep it from staying lit.
  • When you’re done burning, blow out your candle, don’t extinguish with the lid or with water.
  • Once the candle has reached about 1/2″ of wax remaining, stop burning it. Continuing to burn past this point is a fire hazard.
  • Soy wax candles burn slower and are more temperature sensitive than paraffin candles. Your burn rate and candle characteristics might be different depending on the temperature of the room you burn it in.

If you don’t allow your candle enough time to form a full melt pool on the first burn, a little depression or “tunnel” may start to form around the wick. This will make it more difficult for the wax around the edges of the jar to melt, causing the tunneling effect to continue with each burn. Eventually the tunnel will become too deep for fresh oxygen to flow in, and your candle will have trouble staying lit for more than short periods of time.

Your wick shouldn’t produce any soot or smoke

We use very high quality and thoroughly tested wood wicks in our Candles … so combined with our healthy blend of 100%  soy candle wax and natural oils, these should burn extremely clean with no soot or smoke.

If you are experiencing any smoke from a wood wick candle it’s usually because the wick needs to be trimmed and the burnt parts cleared out, or there is a draft interfering with the natural burn.

Are wood wick candles eco friendly?

We’re so happy you asked! In addition to their unique style and aroma, our wood wick Candles are one of the most eco-friendly candles you can find. When you purchase our wooden wick candles you can be sure that ALL of our wicks are from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-Certified mills and are 100% American-made, being sourced and manufactured in the USA.

Our Waxes

All our candles are made with healthy blend of 100% coconut or soy candle wax with no additives or dyes. Our waxes are gluten free, toxin free, paraben free, phthalate free and come from renewable sources. The entire blend utilizes only FDA approved waxes..

Why won't my candle stay lit?

There are many reasons a wick will not stay lit. The most common reasons a wick may self-extinguish include:

The wick is too far above the surface of the wax when the candle is initially lit – Solution: Make sure the wick is trimmed to be no longer than 1/4” – 3/16” / 6.4mm – 4.8mm above the wax. This is counter-intuitive, as we think a longer wick will make a larger flame, but it will not. The longer the wick, the harder it is for the wax to flow up to the top.

We recommend to make sure that your first burn is always to a full melt pool (wax melted to the edge of the vessel)…. The main reason a wick won’t stay lit is because the candle was not burnt correctly on the first burn.
